Abstract

AISI 4340 (34CrNiMo6), after heat treatment, is a material with high hardness and tensile strength, and is therefore widely used in the manufacturing of mechanical components and automotive parts. During the machining process of this material, vibration has a significant impact on surface quality and machining efficiency. This paper analyzes vibration (Vib) and surface roughness (Ra) in the turning of AISI 4340 steel using ceramic cutting tools, applying the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The study identifies the optimal set of machining parameters that minimize Vib and Ra, and evaluates the influence of each technological parameter on vibration and surface roughness. This turning process has the potential to replace conventional grinding, offering lower machining time and cost.
