Abstract

In this study, hydrogel material (HGM) was successfully synthesized from cellulose and chemical linkers including acrylic acid (AA), ammonium persulfate (APS) and N,N’-methylenebisacryaminde (MBA). Physical and chemical properties of HGM, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and hydration rate, show high physical durability and great hydration properties. In addition, examinations on impact of pH, time, weight of material and initial concentrations are also conducted with chromium (VI) for the investigation of optimal conditions. The study shows that HGM can adsorb chromium (VI) in water with 82 percent efficiency with the optimal conditions of pH = 2, 120 mins, initial concentration = 10 mg/l from 0.2 g HGM.
