Abstract

Graphene oxide (GO) is a two-dimensional carbon material that is known as a future material due to its excellent properties. In this study, we report a green electrochemical synthesis for the production of GO using the graphite rod and potassium carbonate solution as electrolytes. The as-synthesized GO has been carefully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman analysis techniques, and UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). The obtained results show that GO synthesized using K2CO3 0.08 M, 12 V in 120 min at room temperature was the best quality. The UV-vis spectrum of GO includes two typical absorption peaks at 230 nm corresponding to C=C bonds and a band at 280-320 nm of C=O bond. GO sheets exhibit the number of layers about 5-6, interlayer distance was 0.82 nm. Hence, this work provides a simple method for the synthesis of GO with low cost, environmentally friendly, and advantageous in mass production.
